Reasons You should VISIT TERCEIRA ISLAND IN THE AZORES
The Azores isn't a widely recognized location for many Brits - when I told individuals I was on my method to stop by Terceira , many folks said,' Where's that?' Answer: inside the Atlantic.
It's not difficult to dismiss the Azores: they're part of Portugal and mainland Portugal and Madeira are much easier, cheaper and quicker getting to; the only airline to travel by plane direct from the UK, along with just during the summertime, is Azores Air, for this reason you may be required to prevent off in Lisbon (a beautiful city, so actually that is no hardship); not to mention, as the destinations are over 1000km from the mainland, it takes quite some time to get there.
But they're really worth the effort. Having just recently visited Terceira island, here are three reasons you should put it with your holiday wish list:
VOLCANOES
Terceira is the only place on the planet where you are able to go INSIDE a volcano and actually stand in (the now extinct) magma chamber. At Algar Carvao (part on the Pico Alto, which is an energetic volcano) you do not need to abseil down or use any special equipment - there's nothing far more strenuous than a walk through a long tunnel to get to the interior, and then lots of easy to manage measures consuming you lower into the large, round chamber where the magma previously bubbled. The walls look like a Jackson Pollock painting of hues of brown with small sparkles of obsidian.
HIKING
You will find a lot of remarkable places in the world to go hiking and Terceira certainly offers a great deal of variety. But for me, the Misterios Negros really stood out, and is a reason to check out the island. The trail is through the untamed Nature Reserve of Serra de Santa Brbara.
It's a challenging hike as the route is quite uneven; you clamber over rocks, use logs as stepping stones through the water, duck under low limbs and climb up into the cloud forest.
FOOD
Even in case you have not travelled to a place for the meals, the gastronomic adventure is able to leave you with a wonderful taste of an area, or perhaps that underwhelming feeling of simply wanting getting home to consume something decent. In Terceira it will be the former; much of their food is cultivated on the island, for this reason it is full and fresh of flavour, there are neighborhood cheeses to try, and even make their own wines. And additionally you will find the cakes.
BONUS - WHALES & DOLPHINS All these are great reasons to book a vacation to Terceira - but in case you want one more reason, then it's to end up being the whale watching. The Azores are recognized for an abundance of whales all year round, so there is a fairly good chance that you'll spot one (or perhaps more) when out during a boat during the deep water beyond the island. A small zodiac is a good way to travel - stable, fast, in addition to close to the water, hence you'll get a great view.
